I was born in Denmark, Iowa. A small town in southeast Iowa. I began working with metal around 1994 at Steffensmeier Welding, a custom fabrication and repair shop near my home town. While there I learned a great deal from the people I worked with about fabrication as well as a strong commitment to work and quality. Around 2000 I moved to San Diego for a short time and then Des Moines, Iowa. I moved to Chicago in 2004 and currently work for Chicago Copper and Iron Works.
I’ve never really been able to pinpoint what motivates me to create anything. Since I was young I’ve constantly been throwing odds and ends together and once I begin the ideas start forming and evolving. With the exception of furnishings and custom applications, my work usually remains unplanned or undefined until it’s very near completion. I’m always experimenting and any idea I start with usually changes considerably throughout the process. The constant learning experiences and challenges that present themselves regularly is what I enjoy most from my work and this is perhaps what motivates me.
Currently, I am trying to focus more on furniture and accents and functional pieces so hopefully you will see more of that here in the near future. I am also doing side projects for a few local businesses. Mostly architectural accents, sign work and ornamental displays.
